Eyelid Spasms

Eyelid spasms are when your eyelids move involuntarily (out of your control). An eyelid twitch or tic is a quick movement of the lid. It is usually related to being tired or stressed. It can also come from having too much caffeine.

An essential blepharospasm is when one or both of your eyelids close completely, making daily activities difficult. A hemifacial spasm is when muscles on one side of your face tighten, affecting that eye. Both of these spasms are most often treated with injections of botulinum toxin, a muscle-relaxing medicine. Sometimes other drugs are used. Occasionally surgery may be an option.

Your ophthalmologist will discuss the best treatment for your eyelid spasm.
